Shivling 3′

Material Used: Black Stone is used in carving this Divine Shiva linga. This linga is elegantly carved by our artisans.

Linga, in Hinduism, a votary object that expresses the God Shiva and is respected as a symbol of generative power. The lingam appears in Shaivite temples and in private shrines throughout India.

In Shiva temples the lingam is often at the center, surrounded by other God Murtis. In contrast to the latter, the lingam is distinctively aniconic. It is a smooth cylindrical mass. Often it rests in the center of a lipped, disk-shaped object, the yoni, which is an emblem of the goddess Shakti. Ancient Sanskrit texts such as the Mahabharata and the Puranas describe narratives that recognize the lingam as the phallus of Shiva. Practicing Hindus consider the lingam and yoni unitedly to symbolize the union of the male and female principles and the totality of all existence.

The Shivling is venerated with offerings of milk, water, fresh flowers, young sprouts of grass, fruit, leaves, and sun-dried rice. Among the most famous lingams are those called svayambhuva (“self-originated”), which are cylindrical rocks found in caves or on the ground that are believed to have come into existence by themselves at the origin of time, nearly 70 are worshiped in various parts of India.

A universal icon in South India is the lingodbhavamurti, which shows Shiva emerging out of a fiery lingam. This is a description of a story in which the gods Vishnu and Brahma were once discussing their respective importance when Shiva arrived in the form of a blazing pillar to quell their pride. Brahma took the form of a swan and flew upward to see if he could find the top of the pillar, and Vishnu took the form of a boar and plunged below to find its source. Neither was successful, and both were compelled to recognize Shiva’s priority and superiority.

The Shivling signifies three perfections of Shiva. The upper oval part of the Shivalingam denotes Parashiva and the lower part of the Shivalingam called the pitha represents Parashakti. In Parashiva perfection, Shiva is the supreme reality, the timeless, formless, and spaceless. In Parashakti perfection, Shiva is all-pervasive, pure consciousness, power, and primal substance of all that exist and it has form, unlike Parashiva which is formless. According to Rohit Dasgupta, the lingam signifies Shiva in Hinduism, and it is also a phallic symbol.
