  • Sale! tall, majestic, rectangular ancient Mayan relief carving, or stela, made from light gray or beige, textured limestone, stands vertically against a dark, featureless background. The deep bas-relief sculpture prominently features a regal, human-like figure depicted in profile, facing slightly towards the right. This central figure, likely a Classic Maya ruler or deity, wears an exceptionally elaborate and towering headdress, adorned with multiple layers of long, flowing feathers that fan out upwards and backwards, along with a stylized, zoomorphic head — possibly a quetzal bird or a mythological serpent — at its crest. The figure's face features a prominent nose and chin, typical of Mesoamerican art, and its body is clad in rich ceremonial attire. A complex, multi-layered pectoral necklace or chest plate covers the upper torso, intricately detailed with geometric patterns. The arms are bent, with the left hand (from the viewer's perspective) appearing to hold a ceremonial staff or scepter that extends downwards, while the right arm rests alongside a patterned sash or belt. The lower body is adorned with an elaborate, pleated skirt or loincloth, intricately decorated with bands of patterns, and the legs are visible, possibly wrapped or wearing leg guards, leading down to sandaled feet. To the left of the main figure, a large, complex mythological creature or serpent deity with scales and possibly fangs, seems to intertwine or emerge from behind, its head facing upwards and its body coiling downwards, adding to the iconographic density of the piece. Its form is suggestive of a vision serpent or feathered serpent. On the right side of the carving, a vertical column of finely detailed Mayan hieroglyphic glyphs runs from the top edge to the bottom, signifying a significant historical date, a ruler's name, or a cosmological narrative. The background areas not occupied by the main figures feature a textured, cross-hatched, or brick-like pattern, enhancing the depth of the stone carving.
