Fu dogs

Size: 2ft

Quantity: 2 pieces (1 Pair)

Material: We used a unique type of sandstone to create this pair of sculptures. The sculptures are ideal for use in outdoor settings and gardens. The fu dogs have been given an antique look, which will add to the overall beauty of the installation.

The fabled lion-like creatures known as fu (or fo) dogs serve as defenders. The entrances and gates to palaces, governmental buildings, temples, residences, and even graves in China are guarded by these types of statues. These guard dogs keep an eye on things and were traditionally used to fend off evil energy.

Foo dogs are considered to have arisen from the lion’s protective emblem, which migrated to China with Buddhism. They are also known as Chinese guardian lions. At the gateways of many Buddhist temples were guarding lions. Because the lion is not a native of China, the foo dogs became to resemble legendary creatures that resemble dogs and lions. They’ll be in a vicious stance, up on their front paws or with one up in the air.

Chinese guardian lions are often seen in pairs outside of palaces and temples, they are depicted as a pair of guardian figures. The symbol of this animal represents yin-yang, which is the perfect representation of the relationships between males and females. The male fu dog is often shown with a ball in its mouth or atop its head- this represents the “yin” or feminine side of the balance. The female seems to have offspring by her side, often depicted as a baby.

Whether you’re replacing an existing pair of Chinese guardian lions, or adding to your set, knowing how to care for these dogs is important. Sacred objects such as these guardian lions should be treated with respect. Although they’re meant to stand out in the elements as a reminder of the natural earth, they can still become damaged or dirty over time.

Placement: You can use fu dogs as feng shui additions to your home. They are typically placed on each side of a doorway, on the exterior, and facing out away from the interior of the home. It’s best to place them in pairs (see pictures about pairs) and not on the floor. You often see them on platforms, raised above the ground at waist height. They don’t need to be super large, but they do need to be proportionally sized to the building and/or space they are protecting.

Chinese guardian lions that have all these colors are also auspicious because the complete set of colors will balance the five elements. The colorful sculptures can be customized in fibre.
