The Vishnu avatar called Rama is also identified by other names. He is termed Ramachandra (beautiful, lovely moon), or Dasarathi (son of Dasaratha), or Raghava. He is also known as Ram Lalla (Infant form of Rama).
Rama (or Ramacandra) is the seventh avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu. His experiences cover the slaying of the demon king Ravana which is recounted in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata and in the Ramayana, the oldest Sanskrit epic, composed sometime in the 5th century BCE but with some later enhancements.
Lord Rama, viewed by many Hindus to be based on a historical figure, is perhaps the noblest hero from Hindu mythology and he, along with his wife Sita, is a representation of purity and marital faithfulness. Further, the events of Rama represent above all the greatness and rewards of fulfilling one’s pious duty or dharma.
Rama outlives a figure of worship across India and Southeast Asia but particularly in Oude and Bihar. He has, for instance, a great temple at Rameswaram, famous for its 17th century CE columned corridor. In addition, the Ramanandis is the most populous and reasonably strictest Vaishnava religious order. Rama is also viewed by some Buddhists to be an avatar of Buddha, and images of the hero sometimes resemble on the outside of Buddhist temples.
In art, Rama is eternally youthful and typically has green or blue skin, carries a bow and arrows, and wears a yellow robe. He is most often seen with Sita, Laksmana, and Hanuman – collectively known as Rama’s family or Rama Darbar.
Episodes from the Ramayana are particularly popular in Hindu sculpture, wall paintings, and art in general, most of all forest scenes with Rama hunting the deer and the epic battle with Ravana.
Sita is admired as the embodiment of Lakshmi, the companion of Vishnu. Though often marked as the epitome of wifely devotion and self-sacrifice, she is important to Rama at times, even in the earliest version of the Ramayana, and in some of the later stories of the literature she leaves from the idealized, chaste image of the earlier text.
She is usually described in Indian miniature representations of the Ramayana and in South Indian bronzes. These normally form a group, with images of Rama, his brother Lakshmana, and his devotee, the monkey Hanuman. The iconographic documents instruct the artist to show Sita looking at her husband with the greatest happiness.
