In Hindu mythology, Nandi is Lord Shiva‘s heavenly chariot, which takes the appearance of a bull. The statue of Nandi may be seen in every temple dedicated to Lord Shiva across the world.
The Nandi statue in Hampi is known locally as Yeduru Basavanna and is located opposite the famed Virupaksha Temple. The construction is a large monolith that is built on an elevated platform in the shape of a two-story pavilion. The idol features simple carvings and is surrounded by large stones, which contribute to its allure. A stone lamp with spikes stands a short distance away from the idol.
The Nandi statue is revered and cherished by the inhabitants of Hampi, and it is said to safeguard the town. Despite little wear and tear from the passage of time, the monument remains attractive to tourists. The monument is also the focal point of the Vijaya Utsav, Hampi’s annual arts festival, which takes place in November.
Nandi sitting before Shiva Linga signifies that a human being should turn away from Prakruthi.
