Nandi is Shiva’s closest helper because he is the spirit of receptivity. Before you go into a temple, you must have the place of Nandi – to completely sit. Nandi (also Nandin) is the divine bull calf, gatekeeper, and vehicle (vahana) of the Hindu god Shiva. Statues of Nandi are a familiar sight at Hindu temples devoted to his master, and he is partially liable for the Hindu worship for living bulls even today, uniquely in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
The respect shown to the bull in modern India is somewhat because of his connection with Shiva. In Hindu towns such as Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh state, certain bulls are given the freedom to wander the streets. They are supposed to belong to the god, and they are marked on the flank with the trident symbol of Shiva.
According to the Vayu Purana, Nandi is the son of Kasyapa and Surabhi. In the Saura Purana, Nandi is described as “dressed with all ornaments, sparkling like a thousand stars, grasping a trident in his hand, three-eyed, decked with a sliver of the moon, a thunderbolt in his palm, four-armed, like a second Sankara [Shiva]” for his role as Shiva’s defender.
Shiva’s carrier and the leader of the god’s ganas, or companions, is the black stone Nandi figure, who usually wears a golden team of office. Shiva’s other responsibilities include preserving all quadrupeds and performing the tandava, or cosmic dance of creation while supplying the music.
Nandi statue stone is a bull seated on a pedestal in front of most Hindu temples dedicated to Shiva, particularly Dravida (Southern) temples. In the main temple, he is housed in a Nandi mandapa, a distinctive columned building where he gazes in devotion at Shiva’s linga. Bells, clappers, and floral decorations are typically used to decorate the bull.
In Javanese temples, Shiva can take the appearance of a bull, known as Nandi-Kesvara, who stands guard with a trident in one hand and a lotus flower in the other. In Hindu art, Nandi is commonly represented as Shiva’s steed with pure white skin. He also appears with Shiva on the first and second days.
