Hanuman has transcended the five senses, making him a powerful yogi (mystic) (Pancha Indriyas). The Tamil author Kamba Ramayanam describes the relation of the five elements with Hanuman as follows:

  • Hanuman is known as Pavana Thanaya or Pawan Putra and is regarded as the son of the wind. He is incredibly powerful and can move through the air. It is believed that Lord Air is Lord Hanuman’s father-Air.
  • Hanuman accompanied Lord Rama in rescuing Devi Sita by crossing a wide body of water, which is why he is regarded as having overcome a nature element-Water.
  • He effortlessly moved through the sky as he leaped over it, giving him the ability to pass one of the five elements – Sky.
  • Devi Sita, who is regarded as the daughter of the earth, was initially introduced to him during her rescue operation. Consequently, Hanuman received a natural favor from another aspect- Earth.
  • He set fire to Lanka, and the flames favored his behavior. Which made him again the master of the fifth element – Fire.

Panchmukhi Hanuman story

When Ravana’s son Indrajit is killed during the Ramayana’s fight with Rama, Ravana asks his brother Ahiravana for assistance. The ruler of Patala (the underworld), Ahiravana, pledges to help. Rama is alerted to the scheme by Vibhishana, who somehow gets to learn about it. Hanuman is instructed to keep watch and to prevent anyone from entering the chamber where Rama and Lakshmana reside. Ahiravana makes many efforts to enter the chamber, but Hanuman always manages to stop him. Finally, Ahiravana assumes the guise of Vibhishana and is permitted entry by Hanuman. As soon as he steps inside, Ahiravana takes away the “sleeping Rama and Lakshmana.”

Hanuman visits Vibhishana after realizing what has transpired.  He exclaims, “Unfortunately! Ahiravana is responsible for their kidnapping. Rama and Lakshman will both be offered as a sacrifice to Chandi by Ahiravana if Hanuman does not intervene promptly. Hanuman travels to Patala, where a blend of a reptile and a Vanara stands guard at the entrance. I’m Makardhwaja, your kid, the creature responds when Hanuman asks who he is. Hanuman, a skilled Brahmachari, is perplexed by the fact that he’d never given birth to a kid. The monster says, “A drop of your semen (Veeriya) dropped to the water and into the mouth of a big crocodile as you were jumping across the ocean. The source of my birth is this.

Hanuman approaches Patala after defeating his son and runs into Ahiravana and Mahiravana. They have a large army, and Chandrasena informs Hanuman that the only way to defeat them is by simultaneously blowing out five candles, one in each of five directions, in exchange for a pledge from Hanuman to be Lord Rama‘s companion. Ahiravana and Mahiravana were put to death as Hanuman adopts his five-headed form (Panchmukhi Hanuman) and promptly extinguishes the five separate lights. Rama and Lakshmana were both forced senseless throughout the story by a demon’s spell.
